Gaga was introduced to performing artist Lady Starlight during this time and, following a performance at the Lollapalooza Festival in 2007 Gaga was signed by Vince Herbert to Streamline Records which is an imprint of Interscope Records. Having served as an apprentice songwriter for an internship with Famous Music Publishing, which was later acquired by Sony/ATV Music Publishing, Gaga subsequently struck a music publishing agreement with Sony/ATV. The result was that she was hired to write music for Britney Spears and labelmates New Kids on the Block, Fergie, and the Pussycat Dolls. At Interscope, singer-songwriter Akon recognized her vocal abilities when she sang a reference vocal for one of his tracks in studio; Akon then convinced Interscope-Geffen-A&M Chairman and CEO Jimmy Iovine to form a joint deal by having her also sign with his own label Kon Live, making her his "franchise player. Gaga's 2008 debut album, 'The Fame' received only moderate radio airplay. The singer went on tour in Europe and the US in support of the album. It was not until the 2009 hit "Just Dance" that mainstream pop music really started to flourish. Gaga was suffering from a labral tear on her right leg, which she secretly nursed for several weeks to ensure she was able to continue the tour. She was unable to walk after a show in Toronto and was in severe discomfort. The tour was cancelled.
